The use of stop-motion animation in Google Slides is away to engage the audience with movement. The animation also gives the creator an opportunity to explore new media types. Students in the classroom can use stop-motion for digital storytelling or reenacting historical events.

The first step of creating a stop-motion animation is to begin with Google Slides by creating a base slide and putting a background on the slide. In order to create a background, the creator would go to Google and conduct an image search within Google slides. The creator should be careful to follow copyright and fair use guidelines by giving attribution to the selected image. After the image is selected, it will be added to the background of the slide.

Next, the animation elements should be added to the slide. The Techokids website gives specific instructions for adding animation elements such as a ghost, car, or spaceship. The spaceship element will be used for the example posted in this blog. The creator can search within Google Slides to find an image. The search should include Png in order to locate a transparent image. Also, be aware of giving proper attribution. The image of a person and a spaceship should be located. The person is cropped so that only the face is left. Then, the face is cropped into a circle. The face is placed over the spaceship to create the animation. The images are placed on the background.

In order to create the stop-motion animation, the creator must duplicate each slide several times. Then, move the spaceship image forward on each slide so that the image travels through space. The creator may begin and end the slide show with an image of space without the spaceship. Also, the creator may add a speech bubble to give humor to the animation.

The Google Slides are published to the web. The auto advance should be changed to every second. Then click start slideshow as soon as the player loads and restart the slideshow after the last slide. The published slideshow will create a link that can be shared with others.

The process for creating stop-motion animation with Google Slides can be taught to students in the classroom in order to give them multiple options for expressing their learning. After training, the students will enjoy creating animations as a part of project-based learning.
