The Fishbowl Strategy is an excellent technique for stretching the discussion and reflection skills of the students in your classroom. The tech tool that can be paired with the Fishbowl Strategy is Nearpod. Both the use of Nearpod and the discussion technique can give students ownership of their own learning and help students to become expert learners.
The Fishbowl Strategy is a discussion technique for the classroom which has the potential to motivate the students who are outside of the fishbowl discussion and to increase the intensity of the students who are inside the fishbowl discussion group. The students who compose the inner circle or the fishbowl discussion have a civil discourse while the students in the outer circle intently evaluate and take notes.
Nearpod is an app which helps engage students with interactive tools. Since the app can be used as a teacher-paced lesson or an independent student-paced lesson, Nearpod is a good fit for the Fishbowl Strategy. Nearpod engages students because it allows students to interact with the information and with each other through Nearpod tools. Nearpod may also be used to provide choices for multiple means of representation of information and the expression of learning. Therefore, it uses the Universal Design for Learning Framework.
A screencast tutorial has been developed which will help the educator discover how to combine the use of the Fishbowl Strategy and Nearpod. The screencast tutorial is posted in the blog below. Also, a novice Nearpod user can find information for setting up a Nearpod account and learn how to use Nearpod by accessing this link.
